Storage-Aware Caching: Revisiting Caching for Heterogeneous Storage Systems

چکیده
Modern storage environments are composed of a variety of devices with different performance characteristics. In this paper, we explore storage-aware caching algorithms, in which the file buffer replacement algorithm explicitly accounts for differences in performance across devices. We introduce a new family of storageaware caching algorithms that partition the cache, with one partition per device. The algorithms set the partition sizes dynamically to balance work across the devices. Through simulation, we show that our storageaware policies perform similarly to LANDLORD, a costaware algorithm previously shown to perform well in Web caching environments. We also demonstrate that partitions can be easily incorporated into the Clock replacement algorithm, thus increasing the likelihood of deploying cost-aware algorithms in modern operating

Optimizing Hierarchical Storage Management For Database System
Caching is a classical but effective way to improve system performance. To improve system performance, servers, such as database servers and storage servers, contain significant amounts of memory that act as a fast cache. Meanwhile, as new storage devices such as flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are added to storage systems over time, using the memory cache is not the only way to improve s...
متن کاملHybrid Storage Management for Database Systems
The use of flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) in storage systems is growing. Adding SSDs to a storage system not only raises the question of how to manage the SSDs, but also raises the question of whether current buffer pool algorithms will still work effectively. We are interested in the use of hybrid storage systems, consisting of SSDs and hard disk drives (HDDs), for database management. ...
متن کاملTopology-Aware I/O Caching for Shared Storage Systems
The main contribution of this paper is a topologyaware storage caching scheme for parallel architectures. In a parallel system with multiple storage caches, these caches form a shared cache space, and effective management of this space is a critical issue. Of particular interest is data migration (i.e., moving data from one storage cache to another at runtime), which may help reduce the distanc...
متن کاملCaching for flash-based databases and flash-based caching for databases
Database storage systems today are primarily based on two technologies: HDD (hard disk drive) and DRAM (dynamic random-access memory). It is increasingly difficult for these systems to deliver acceptable performance, due to fast expanding data volume, growing energy concern, and cost constraints. The emergence of flash memory has made cost-effective solutions possible. However, conventional sto...
متن کاملCLIC: CLient-Informed Caching for Storage Servers
Traditional caching policies are known to perform poorly for storage server caches. One promising approach to solving this problem is to use hints from the storage clients to manage the storage server cache. Previous hinting approaches are ad hoc, in that a predefined reaction to specific types of hints is hard-coded into the caching policy. With ad hoc approaches, it is difficult to ensure tha...
